The Human Mind…

Today, I watched Micahel Shermer’s “The Pattern behind Self Deception” on ted talks, and I must say I was pretty intrigued.

See the human mind has a tendency to find patterns in everything and these patterns become either False Positives or  False negatives. I guess its our way of “finding the meaning of life”

Confused?????? Well let’s see if it makes sense….

Making an A on a test:

Person A: Studies every night for two weeks

Person B: Studies at random intervals for two weeks

Who makes the A on the test – Most people will lean towards person A? Why because it appears that since person A studies every night(pattern) they have a greater chance of making an A…….

Well lets dig a little deeper:

Person A:”Studies every night” but studies only for 20 minutes a day, and watches TV while they study.

Person B: “Studies at random intervals” but studies for 2 hours with no distractions.

When we look at the facts it become unclear who is better off…….

I need to go *study* this GMAT book – but I thought I would at least summarize what I was thinking.
