The Human Mind…

•June 20, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Today, I watched Micahel Shermer’s “The Pattern behind Self Deception” on ted talks, and I must say I was pretty intrigued.

See the human mind has a tendency to find patterns in everything and these patterns become either False Positives or  False negatives. I guess its our way of “finding the meaning of life”

Confused?????? Well let’s see if it makes sense….

Making an A on a test:

Person A: Studies every night for two weeks

Person B: Studies at random intervals for two weeks

Who makes the A on the test – Most people will lean towards person A? Why because it appears that since person A studies every night(pattern) they have a greater chance of making an A…….

Well lets dig a little deeper:

Person A:”Studies every night” but studies only for 20 minutes a day, and watches TV while they study.

Person B: “Studies at random intervals” but studies for 2 hours with no distractions.

When we look at the facts it become unclear who is better off…….

I need to go *study* this GMAT book – but I thought I would at least summarize what I was thinking.

Assignment 5.

“Technology has changed dramatically in the last decade, but perhaps nowhere more than with cellular phone technology. From being a device for dialing numbers cellphones have evolved to where they’re a portable entertainment and media device, with music players, Web access, and even the ability to play videos and television content” -Dave

Cellfire business model is interesting, they deliever coupons to cellphones using an app installed on the phone. These coupons are considered “opt-in” because you have to install the device to get them!

For the business model project I will be trying to get in touch with: Niklas Zenstrom and Janus Friis

Janus Friss:”http://www.janusfriis.net/”

Joost attracts anyone who spends HOURS on the computer ;-) and those who have a need to fill in time watching cartoons or shows.

Joost is attractive because it is easy to access and, fast, and user friendly. It can run on most Os’s and its interactive.

It sounds cliche’ but……After watching all of the videos I feel this statement summarizes it best: “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”………

Final class project

My plan to basically create neat textures and construct neat interactive scripts. I plan on using key points from chpt 10, and using unilever as my example….

I want to focus on the use of the evolution video through youtube to reach the masses (5 million people) in one year for free.

I also want to (because of lack of space) Post the three essential needs to transform your company in the groundswell.

The value of this website is in the ability to connect with likeminded people. Secondlife is just that, a secondlife that you can constantly live in. There are actual virtual representations of real world entities that can produce real life results. The IBM island has a spot for internships and jobs for tech savvy people.

Cloud Computing…Interesting what the class response was.

I thought it was interesting to hear what people thought about cloud computing in class. Being directly involved in cloud computing at superior information systems, and working under several cloud computing experts; Carl Garrison, C.I.O Joe Cardenas (EDIC), and Joseph Ivision. At first I thought it was surprising that people did not embrace the idea of cloud computing, then I realized my views were distorted because of experience for example:

———————————–

I use salesforce.com and servicedesk.com every single day.

EDIC (employers direct insurance company) Based in agoura hills californa uses a third party email service that we at superior i.s. montior and support.

I in fact work at a company that is in the cloud (we provide business process/helpdesk support) to EDIC

Because of privacy issues I cannot disclose the other functions that are in the cloud but there are many.

———————————————–

It seems almost unreal not to compute in the cloud, why not? I’m starting to see there is a huge difference in learning and applying concepts, as I sit and listen and take in the views of everyone in the class it’s amazing how my views on somethign are completely different then the consensus. My position places me directly responsible for 350 users every single day from several different companies. I do not work for any of these companies, I work for superior information systems but I support them.

The thought that cloud computing threatens our jobs is simply ludacris to me. “You can give a child a book but all they can do is play with it if they do not know how to read”

There are several C.I.O’s embracing cloud computing and in fact supporting it because it shrinks IT cost, and it provides the Best service (why do i say this) let me explain.

USA.net is an email provider that specializes in only EMAIL, nothing else. They are only concerned with email; let me reinforce this statement “They are SPECIALIST in email” In fact there business plan is ONLY providing email.

Now with that being said As an I.S. professional it would be smart to outsource your email to USA.net  (the experts) so you can focus on I.T. issues within your company. Cloud computing makes your job as an I.S. professional more effective.

Another example:

In house helpdesk vs Helpdesk in the cloud.

;-) The title clearly does not reflect the context of this blog.  After sitting back and taking in conversations in class I have decided to follow the following people; Daniel, Andrew, and ahmad respectively they have 18,19, and 18 followers.

The main reason I selected these people is directly related to the input in class conversations.

What I Plan to get out of this course.

There are alot of different things I would like to get out of this course, but if I were to summarize and choose one thing it would have to be understanding how to effectively use “web 2.0 programs” in a professional business enviornment.

I currently use: Twitter, facebook, Myspace, and LinkedIn.

Zoho.com…..

The guys I am trying to get in contact with are:

Gary Raj & Ian wenig.

I have sent an email to them but I have not recieved a response, so I am going to see if I can locate them via Linkedin, or Twitter… (But I do not want to appear like a cyber stalker)

Yelp! Is an interesting tool for reviews ;-) After signing up for yelp I was intrigued to find my favorite Club [Warehouse Live] front and center. So I decided to contribute my thoughts about the venue:
